[edit]

John J Carney who died of emphysema on the weekend of February 25, was born in the London of 1940, just as the first bombs were dropping.

Coming from a theatrical family he was the first born of James George Charles Carney, the actor, and Diana Marion Campbell of the military family. directly descended from the 2nd Earl of Cawdor. His Grandfather, George Carney (who once worked with Chaplin) was very well known in the business.

Following the death of his father when he was 15, he went into the Army, joining the Junior Leaders' Regiment of the Royal Artillery. After buying himself out. John obtained his Equity card in the early sixties and much work followed in a wide and varied career.

His repertory work included York, Scarborough, Derby, Bournemouth, Ludlow, Sheffield and touring Northern Ireland with The Rivals. He was in London at The Royal Court and in Nicol Williamson's Hamlet, which toured the USA, and later made into a film.

Of the films and TV should be mentioned Charge of the Light Brigade. Clockwork Orange, Shooting Party, Shogun and Treasure Island. His many television appearances included The Saint, Dr Who, Budgie, Z Cars, Honey Lane, The Professionals, Sweeney, Blake 7, Shoestring, Everyman, Out, Diana and comedy with Rowan Atkinson.

John began to contract the slow debilitating illness in the mid eighties, and as a result was unable to work very often, with the illness becoming more acute in the last three years.

I suspedt that when the end did come, John would have been grateful for the release from suffering, and died peacefully, sitting upright in his favourite chair. Even at the end, he maintained a dignity and purpose of character that was uniquely all his own.
