TRIBUTES poured in today to Liverpool Doctor Who actress Elisabeth Sladen who had died at the age of 63.

The Doctor's former sidekick and current star of spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures had been suffering from cancer.

Lis was born in Liverpool in 1948 and grew up around Sefton Park.

A graduate of the Elliot-Clarke school she later worked behind the scenes at the Liverpool Playhouse where she met her husband, the actor Brian Miller.

She first appeared as Sarah Jane in Doctor Who in 1973 alongside the Third Doctor Jon Pertwee - followed by Liverpool actor Tom Baker.

More recently she revived the role with Doctors David Tennant and Matt Smith.

Russell T Davies created her latest project - the award-winning children's show The Sarah Jane Adventures.

He said: "I absolutely loved Lis.

"She was funny and cheeky and clever and just simply wonderful."

Steven Moffat, Doctor Who's lead writer and executive producer, said: "Never meet your heroes' wise people say. They weren't thinking of Lis Sladen.

"Sarah Jane Smith was everybody's hero when I was younger and as brave and funny and brilliant as people only ever are in stories.

"But many years later, when I met the real Sarah-Jane - Lis Sladen herself - she was exactly as any child ever have wanted her to be.

"Kind and gentle and clever, and a ferociously talented actress, of course, but in that perfectly English unassuming way."

Roger Carey, who represented Lis for many years, said. "She was not just a client but a dear friend.

"She was so positive about life and her natural energy was intoxicating.

"She couldn't believe her luck when her career was resurrected in her own series."

ECHO journalist and science fiction blogger Neil Macdonald interviewed her only last year.

He said: "I had the good fortune to interview Lis as she insisted on being called when the latest series of the incredibly popular spin-off series the Sarah Jane Adventures was due to come out.

"I enjoyed a fantastic and funny hour chatting with her about how lucky she felt to have grown up in Liverpool and her love for the city.

"I've interviewed thousands of people but I will always remember our talk, especially her voice, instantly recognisable but lapsing back into Scouse as she told me about meeting Brian Epstein after bunking off school, or talking to the Liverpool FC players back in the 1970s."

Lis leaves husband Brian and daughter Sadie.
