[edit]

AS a child Colin Young wed to hide behind the sofa whenever the Dr Who theme tune began, but now he shares his home whir a collection of Sea Devils and Cybermen.

Mr Young, 32, is such a fan he has even had a Dalek tattooed on his back. He has been obsessed with the BBC series since 1972, when he saw his first Dr Who programme at the tender age of four.

Since then, the cook from Newtongrange, Midlothian has spent more than £12,000 on filling his home with items and props from the once ground-breaking sci-fi show. Mr Young's home has a full-size lardis and replica Dalek in his bedroom, plus another room full of games, books, jig. sews. hedges and props.

And his vast lifetime collection is going on show as pan of a Dr Who zone at Midlothian Council's forthcoming Alien Invasion exhibition.

He said: "I've been collecting since I was four. The tattoo is the bizarrest part of my collection. It is a Dalek the size of a saucer and it takes collecting to extreme lengths, I suppose."

He said that, of the eight Dr Whos who performed in more than 600 episodes, the original played by actor William Hartnell was his favourite.

He said: "William Hartnell was the quintessential Englishman, and that's what the show was about."

Despite his unusual hobby, Mr Young insists his unearthly interest is quite healthy." "It's the same as trainspotting or stamp collecting, and no stranger than 22 grown men kicking an inflated pig's bladder around a field"
