A FIRM linked to BBC presenter and former creative director Alan Yentob has been given a deal by the broadcaster to sell replica Doctor Who clothing.

Corgi Socks was 'asked by the BBC's costume team' to 'create the official sweater, scarf and socks' worn by the Time Lord.

As a result of a subsequent licensing agreement, the company is now selling a range of Doctor Who replica clothing on its website, including a £249 striped cashmere and cotton jumper, as worn by actress Jodie Whittaker in the recent episode Revolution Of The Daleks.

The deal was struck by the corporation's commercial arm BBC Studios.

While Mr Yentob does not hold shares in Corgi, he is a shareholder in Dewhurst Dent, which has a 'substantial controlling stake' in the company. Members of Mr Yentob's family are also shareholders of Dewhurst Dent, including his brother Robert, who is also a director and chairman of the company.

It is understood that there was no tendering process before the BBC deal, but the corporation insists the agreement adheres to its 'strict rules and regulations for commercial licensing deals'.

Tory MP Giles Watling, who sits on the digital, culture, media and sport committee, said the BBC needed to be 'very careful' with these sort of deals.

The BBC said Mr Yentob was 'not involved' in the deal with Corgi or the running of Dewhurst Dent.

Chris Jones, joint managing director of Corgi, said it has 'no involvement' with Mr Yentob or 'knowledge of his business affairs'.
