PICK OF THE DAY

Flight Of The Dalek

DOCTOR WHO: DALEK

BBC1, 7PM

At last we have an episode of Doctor Who to cherish and it's no coincidence that it features the return of one of the Doctor's oldest and most ruthless foes: a Dalek (above). This, though, is a Dalek with a difference: it has learned how to get upstairs. Veteran Who writer and Dalek enthusiast Robert Shearman has delivered a polished script which eclipses all those which have preceded it in this series.

When the Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and Rose (Billie Piper) land on Earth in the year 2012, they find themselves 53 floors beneath the surface of the Utah salt plains in a museum filled with extraterrestrial paraphernalia collected by megalomaniac Henry van Statten (Corey Johnson). What they are not expecting is his prize specimen, a live alien being van Statten calls a 'Metaltron'. The Doctor is aghast to find himself face to face with the last surviving Dalek. Excellent.
