Doctor Who producer who got rid of 'wobbly jellies in outer space'

Derrick Sherwin, who has died aged 82, was the last surviving Doctor Who producer from before the Tom Baker era. Aficionados credit him with rescuing the programme from collapse when it was suffering from low ratings.

"What we had to do was to forget wobbly jellies in outer space and create some reason for bringing the stories down to earth," he recalled. He cast Jon Pertwee as the third Doctor and appeared in the programme himself as a car-park attendant.

When the show was relaunched in 2005, he dismissed the new look as "a favourite for overgrown schoolboys with little intelligence, pretending to be very clever". He became fed up with television and moved to Thailand where he worked as a bungee-jump proprietor. The Daily Telegraph
