DRAMA Outgoing star Jodie Whittaker has had a bumpy old time of it in the Tardis these past few years. A toxic corner of fandom appeared to marshal against her from the moment her casting was announced, while publicity for this shorter-than-usual new series has been overshadowed by speculation about what Russell T Davies will do once she's gone and he returns as showrunner.

But hang on, because there's something that feels quite special about this latest outing for Whittaker's Doctor. As it's a big interconnected six-part story, we'll be getting the return of a beloved key element: the cliffhanger. That moment of visceral danger followed by the howl of the closing theme; there's nothing else quite like it on TV. And in the thick of the action tonight will be new boy Dan Lewis (John Bishop), whose life in present-day Liverpool is about to change radically, thanks to a terrifying force threatening the universe.
