[edit]

You heard it here first

No sooner is the new Doctor Who having to face his old enemies the Autons - basically animated shop-window dummies - than a Japanese company has unveiled 'real' Autons. These are robotic mannequins that decide their own poses and watch shoppers through digital-camera eyes.

They are not quite as intelligent - or evil - as the Doctor's fiendish enemy. These robo-mannequins (below) use radar technology to sense when someone is near them, and then strike poses based on movements of supermodels.

Meanwhile, their beady camera eyes size up the customer's age, sex and even the brand of their handbag - and then send the information to store managers for market-research purposes.
