REMOTE-controlled Daleks are set to exterminate toy shop rivals.

New £30 models of the scary aliens are likely to become the UK's hottest toys of the year. And the BBC will rake in up to £50million from the Daleks as well as action figures from the smash-it Doctor Who series. The show made a triumphant return to BBC1 at the weekend, attracting 10.5m viewers.

Now a merchandising blitz will feature at least 70 different products, including figures of Dr Who (Chris Eccleston, 40, left) and sidekick Rose (Billie Piper, 22).

The figures — including the one pictured right — will hit the shelves in the autumn, when a toy version of the Doctor's sonic screwdriver will also go on sale.

Mania

Other products will include a Play Station game and ringtones.

A BBC insider said: "Doctor Who hopefully will become the year's hottest brand. Our plan is to make the Doctor Who products the must-have toys of Christmas 2005."

As Doctor Who mania spreads, this week's collectors' edition of Radio Times — with a special Tardis cover and 16-page pullout — yesterday attracted a bid of £9.99 on eBay while it was still on sale in shops for only 93p.
