Critic's choice

Doctor Who

Sun, BBC One, 6.45pm

This could be the most radical move in Doctor Who's history. No, not making the 13th Doctor a woman, but moving the series from its Saturday home to Sundays. Well, reverse the polarity of the neutron flow! Actually there is some precedent for this — a failed experiment in the 1980s moved the show to weekdays. But Sunday night now seems a smart move for the adventures of Jodie Whittaker and co. Viewers are actually at home, there's less competition from talent shows and it will be freshly in mind on playgrounds on Monday morning. And this is very much a new start for the show: no complex back story for this fun Doctor, her three companions and a sleek, breezily cinematic feel.

Whittaker's playful capability is established when she forges a sonic screwdriver out of scrap metal, but the real ace card here could be an older presence: Bradley Walsh, offering a retired bus driver's view of all the intergalactic monster malarkey — which duly arrives. So, a bold fresh start for a creaking institution. It was just a matter of time.
