IT WAS disappointing to read both Matthew Norman (28 May) and Allison Pearson (29 May) writing in such disparaging terms about the new Doctor Who film. Mr Norman has a point in questioning why the BBC sold Doctor Who to the Americans: presumably it is either not interested in making the programme itself or cannot afford to do so.
Ms Pearson is concerned about the story being set in San Francisco. There have been several Dr Who stories over the years that were filmed overseas (Paris, Amsterdam and Seville) or set in other countries, such as The Gunfighters (the Wild West of 1881). It is this flexibility of format that enabled the series to continue for 26 years on the BBC. This new film is intended to introduce the Doctor to a new audience while retaining interest for those already familiar with it. I believe this superbly made and well-cast production succeeded in doing both.
