We know in Doctor Who (BBC1) that the Tardis translates alien languages for the Doctor and his companions, which is why every race in the universe throughout all time seems to speak in modern-day English. John Young Stanhope, Durham
Showrunner Steven Moffat told radiotimes.com: "The scenes just worked better with the Pope speaking Italian. In fairness, the Doctor's translation ability has wobbled before, so it's just having another off moment."
