What should have been a celebratory Radio Times editorial (3 April) on the return of Doctor Who left a sour taste in the mouth. Ben Preston glibly suggested that the new Doctor, Matt Smith, is "no Sylvester McCoy". It remains to be seen whether Smith has what it takes, but will his interpretation be the kind that could inspire a whole generation of writers to pen novels based on that character, despite his sudden absence from TV? Sylvester McCoy did that for writers like Russell T Davies, Paul Cornell and Mark Gatiss, who would, 15 years later, bring the series back.
